Module C1 (conformity to type based on internal production control plus supervised product testing) is a variant of conformity assessment module C, and it covers only the product’s production phase. In comparison to module C, module C1 has additional provisions, containing complementary requirements. For instance, for every other individual product manufactured, at least one test on at least one specific product’s aspect shall be performed by the manufacturer or on his behalf so that the compliance with the applicable legislative requirements is verified.
The choice of the type of body, which will need to perform the examination, is given to the manufacturer. In other words, the manufacturer can choose whether the tests are carried out by either an in-house body or a notified body:
- In the event of choosing an in-house body for the examination, the manufacturer must make sure that the institution is accredited. In many cases, the in-house body is a part of the manufacturer’s organisation, and this assessment is considered as the better and more reliable option of the two. The reliability of the tests and the level of safety are usually improved and of better quality. Moreover, the administration costs and double testing may be reduced which, on the other hand, can result in reductions of the product’s final price that users and consumers have to pay.
- If the manufacturer decides to use a notified body, the latter either performs the tests itself, or it supervises their execution. No matter the case, the manufacturer must make sure that the notified body selected has the necessary technical knowledge, experience and skills in carrying out the required tests.
